Happy Opening Day!

Better late than never...

Thursday was Opening Day (of the baseball season, to all non-American readers) and that's kind of a holiday for me now :) I took the day off which meant I have a four day weekend. I'm using my time to dive into the yoga -- and watch baseball, of course. I've kinda missed it during the winter :)

Got to work this morning and it was positively spooky: the lights were flickering and only few people had power in their cubicles, so we spent a couple of hours in the dark...

Take me out to the Ball Game! --- No, really!

Yay, I made it to a baseball game! My first ever! If you remember, I've attempted to go before, but the game was cancelled due to bad weather.

I've come to appreciate baseball in the last couple of weeks, so I was pretty stoked :) It helps that the Detroit Tigers are a pretty good team too!

The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor

I watched a movie in the Michigan Theater yesterday. A "movie palace" built in 1928... when movies first started including sound and some were still accompanied by a live orchestra or a theater organ.

How many people have walked through, how many friends united, how many hearts broken, and how many people's imagination has traveled through these halls? I love it. I hope I will come here often :)

Btw, we were very happy with the food and the service. It's a nice place to go if you like steak and finer foods. And the view is fantastic!

What I miss about Munich: Alternative movie theaters

I checked out an alternative movie theater in the area yesterday. I really liked it and I hope I'll make a habit of going at least once or twice a month! Nothing comes close to Munich's movie theater scene though... there are tons of theaters and most of them show non-Hollywood stuff. LOVED them so much! And I miss them, so I am very happy to have found a new happy place for myself :)

To get the electricity set up for my apartment, I had to take a trip to Detroit today... as in... actually Detroit, not the suburbs. I also had to pass the "magical border" of 8 Mile Road. This road, made famous by Eminem's sort-of-biographical movie "8 Mile", is the unofficial border between the poor parts of Detroit and it's richer suburbs. I don't want to go into detail here, but when you cross the border it is definitely very noticeable and it really made me think about our society.

Deutsch: Um den Strom in meinem neuen Apartment anzumelden, musste ich heute eine kleine Reise nach Detroit unternehmen... damit meine ich wirklich Detroit und nicht seine Vororte. Ich musste dafür die "magische Grenze" der 8 Mile Road überqueren. Diese Straße, die durch Eminems halb-biographischen Film "8 Mile" berühmt geworden ist, ist die inoffizielle Grenze zwischen dem armen Detroit und seinen reichen Vororten. Ich werde an dieser Stelle nicht in die Tiefe gehen, aber die Grenze zu überschreiten ist definitiv stark spürbar und hat mich stark zum Grübeln gebracht was unsere Gesellschaft angeht.
